MITRACLIP for mitral valve regurgitation and heart failure
Historically, the only option for patients with mitral regurgitation (a condition where the valve is leaking) is open heart surgery. There is now a much less invasive option to treat this condition.
Mitraclip mitral valve repair is a catheter based treatment that we provide for patients with severe mitral valve regurgitation (leakage) at high risk for open heart surgery. This has shown to improve survival as well as reduce heart failure hospitalizations. Our structural service also performs percutaneous balloon mitral valvuloplasty (for mitral stenosis) and treats patients with tricuspid valve regurgitation. We have a dedicated and comprehensive programme to evaluate all valvular heart disease patients before and after their mitral or tricuspid valve interventions or surgery
Are you suitable for the mitraclip procedure?
There are 2 types of patients who will benefit from this procedure:
You would be given general anesthesia following which an ultrasound test with a transesophageal echocardiogram would be used to look at the mitral valve.
Under X ray and ultrasound guidance, a small clip would be delivered through a small incision in the blood vessel of the leg and this would be delivered to the region of the leaky valve. This clip would be applied to pinch the leaflets of the valve to reduce the leaking.
The recent COAPT trial have demonstrated that carefully selected patients with heart failure would benefit substantially from this procedure. This improves the patient’s quality of life, reduces the episodes of hospitalization from heart failure and improves survival.
